Moonlit Races and Blurred Lines

Heath

* * *

"I hope you don't mind that I implied that were going to sleep together," she says as soon as we’re safely in the car. "I didn't really mean it. I just…sort of got caught up in the moment and went with it, you know?"

"Why would I mind? You were just going with the plan." I say, brushing aside disappointment. "Where to? Are you tired? Should I drop you at home?"

"No way. I'm just getting started," she says with a grin. "Let's go to the beach."

"The beach it is," I say, starting up the engine. Hadley opens the window and sticks her arms and head out. "Whoohoo! I'm free! I'm totally free," she shouts into the wind.

After a few seconds, she tucks her arms back in the car. "When I really think about it, I suppose I've always been totally free. Well, I guess, at least for the last year. I just didn't realize it. But I mean like tonight I feel really free. Like, for the first time, I'm not afraid to upset my parents. It's like I've finally realized that this life isn't their life. It's mine and I can do what I want with it."

"Yup. It's true."

“I'm an adult now," she says. "Which is a shockingly late revelation for me. And you know what? I'm thinking I may not even show up for brunch next Sunday. I think I'm gonna call and tell them I don't feel like it."

“Good for you," I say with a firm nod.

"Yeah,” she says. “Good for me.” She tilts her head to the side, staring at me while I drive. “This is just like old times. Except, instead of driving a car full of drunks, there’s just one drunk tonight."

"Yes, history definitely repeats itself," I say, thinking of how I'm exactly where I was back when I was seventeen—wanting the same girl who doesn’t want me back.

We pull into the parking lot at Hidden Beach — a well-hidden gem that the locals have kept to ourselves. It's late, and there are no other cars in the parking lot.

"This brings back memories," I say.

"I actually haven’t been here since we were in high school," Hadley says as we get out of the car and I pocket the keys.

"Seriously? This is the best beach on the island."

"I know, but somehow it just didn't feel right coming here without you.”

We hurry along the sandy path through the trees, for no other reason than how good it feels to run toward something. The only light is from the moon, but the path is well-worn and I know it so well, my feet remember when to lift a little higher to avoid the odd root sticking up here and there. When we reach the clearing, the world becomes the shimmering reflection of the moon on the water that is nothing short of magic and a thought pops into my head without my consent. There’s no other place on this planet that I want to be.
